My teacher, several decades ago, showed me the fingering chart and suggested
alternate ones when the occasion arose and let me decide when to use what.
He couldn't care less, as long as I figured out how to play. He was always
pleased with any improvements, played duets with me and recommended records
of clarinetists he admired. I learned to love the clarinet from this man.
He never rushed me, never chided me, just quietly guided me and played a
consummate clarinet. I practiced 3 hours a day during my teen years, trying
to sound like him. 35 years later, after not playing for 33 of them while I
raised a family, I'm still trying.
