On the same note, Norton (Symantec) normally updates their liveupdate virus
definitions on wednesday afternoon. They update their manually
downloadable Definitions (see
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html) almost
daily. BUT, the catch is that you have to actually go there. There isn't
much automatic about it. Just go to that site, select your version, etc and
run the file that you download, it will update all of your definitions.

This method of definition updating is referred to by Symantec as Intelligent
Updater versus the regular (automatic) Live Update. Again, Live Update is
easier, but, barring some very intensely serious new virus, it is only
update weekly. They find a large number of new viruses every week.

For instance, the Live Update definitions released yesterday (07-30-03) will
detect 64,403 different viruses. The Intelligent Updater definitions
released today (07-31-03) will detect 64,421. That's 18 more viruses in
just one day. Some days it's more. Every day, Symantec will update their
Intelligent Updater files, sometimes more than once in one day, so bookmark
that link if you have Norton Antivirus and consider it to be imperative that
you stay protected and up to date.

(Note, you'll still want to let Live Update run to catch any
software/program upgrades - which occur fairly often)
