True, and that's why orchestras have business managers as wellas performers.
Your orchestra (and most other community orchestras) need professional
marketing help -- someone to sell not only the slam-dunk pops concerts, but
also the classical repertoire that enlightens the audience and allows the
orchestra to show off its virtuosity. One way to do this is to arouse
interest in the origin of the music. What was going on in the political
climate of eastern Europe or Beethoven's personal life that inspired his
symphonies? Audiences may be more interested in a piece if they were more
familiar with the context in which it was composed. Pre-concert promotions
of this type can go a long way toward increasing attendance.
