I don't think that makes the performance (what the audience *heard*) any more
remarkable, but it does perhaps explain things a bit.

Under those circumstances, I'm surprised that with all the vendors and other
musicians there, *someone* couldn't have come up with a better loaner
instrument. Even if a basset clarinet in good condition could not have been
found, I'm sure that with all the "A"s floating around, someone could have
coughed up an instrument in good playing condition. If indeed the instrument
was the crux of the problem, the performance would have been far better even if
the lower notes had to be played higher (like those of us without a basset
clarinet must do).
