Every school/department of music has some variation in what they require.
To find out what they require, call or write the school(s) in which you are
interested in. THEN work to exceed the minimum. It helps overcome audition
nerves. If the school requires that you play eighth notes at 120, learn the
scale at eighth at 160. That way, if you're nervous when you get ready to
play your audition, you'll know that you have the minimum requirement locked
in.

My grandson, this summer, was admitted to the State university as a music
education major, and their audition requirements were all major scales & the
chromatic for the entire range of the instrument, eighth at 120. (Will play
the chromatic and two other scales picked by the committee.) One grade 4-5
exercise that demonstrates technical proficiency. One prepared piece from
the "standard repoitoire" for your instrument. (Accompanist will be
provided.) Sight-reading one piece, grade 3-4. (Since he is a euphonium
player, it would be pointless to list the suggested studies or rep. works.)

Schools will vary, but it seems that it's a fairly good representation of
requirements for the different schools he received mailings from.

Good luck, Jim Hobby
