Subj: [kl] Student mouthpieces

I ordered a Hite Premier from the Woodwind and got it in the mail just =
after
the student I wanted to have try it out was done with her lesson and had
left. I've never tried one of these before but have heard rave reviews
about them for years.
The student in question is an eighth grader playing on a plastic =
Vito
but with not much sound. I had her experiment with mouthpieces and =
ended up
having her borrow my Larry Combs mouthpiece since I don't use it often.
What a difference it made! I can't wait to have her try the Hite =
mouthpiece
next week. She had purchased some Mitchell Lurie reeds(3)-probably only
because its one of the "alternatives" to Ricos that our local music =
store
sells. =20
In light of the fact that the Combs mouthpiece seemed to be the best =
we
tried today, does anyone have suggestions for a particular student
mouthpiece that might go well with the Vito clarinet? I also had her =
try my
daughter's Imperial Woodwind M14, which has been a very good mouthpiece =
for
my daughter so far but she's going to need something else soon also. My
student still has a much bigger sound with the Combs mouthpiece. She =
has
been playing first chair in her grade at the junior high and I'd really =
like
to continue working on sound production and tone with her. The high =
school
clarinet players I've heard here don't have much sound going for them. =20
Anne suggested the Clark Fobes student mouthpiece awhile back and I =
would
like to have one of those around also. Clark, can you perhaps tell me =
how
your's differs from the Hite mouthpiece or the Woodwind mouthpieces? I
figure I'm the only one in town who clarinet lessons and the band =
directors
don't seem to have the supplies with which to allow the kids to =
experiment
so I may as well keep a stash of mouthpieces in the studio. =20

Christy Erickson, who isn't making much of a profit giving music lessons =
but
I sure am having a hell of a good time!
