This isn't laboratory science, but......

I have a sound level meter and a 'sport bag'. The bag is made from
heavy nylon material (carries my scuba gear) and I suspect that the
material is much heavier than used in the 'mute bag'. Whether the two
materials absorb / reflect sound energy equally is unknown.

I played clarion C at my version of 'mf', and the reading was 98 dB on
the C scale. When I enclosed my clarinet in the bag and did my best to
play at the same loudness --- trying my best to judge by the 'feel' of
my breath support, though of course I couldn't avoid hearing the sound
--- the meter oscillated between 96 dB and 97 dB.

By comparison, my speaking voice varied from 76 dB to 80 dB with the
meter positioned the same distance from my mouth as it had been from my
clarinet.

As I said, not laboratory science......
