So, Goodman didn't know the fingering for low E, then.

....heh! Yes, he did. (How could we believe otherwise of B.G.?)
But with all fingers covering holes --- instead of Benny holding only
the tip of the mouthpiece --- the clarinet wouldn't reach to the gas
port near the ceiling. ;-) ;-) ;-)
