I had the most wonderful experience just this past Monday night - I was asked to fill in for a reading of Haydn's Creation at a local music symposium. However, I was playing bass trombone, not clarinet, though I noticed some beautiful clarinet lines in the piece. The bass trombone part is actually quite fantastic, has the full melody for Achieved is the Glorious Work in the 26th movement. In fact, I noticed phenomenal pieces of scoring throughout the orchestra, it's not overdone at all, and your comment of "sparing" applies everywhere. This was my first time playing the piece (though my trombone choir has a 4-part arrangement of Achieved, except it's in concert Ab, so I at least had a clue as to how the movement was supposed to sound). Too bad I'll be on the Cape next week, as I'll miss doing it again... :-(
