Bear,

No - it's not fair that someone would judge a piece of music without hearing
it. But I don't think that Tim Roberts actually did. He did make some
assumptions based on his interpretation of your "announcements" and/or
"statements" which are quite possibly invalid (we can't judge until we've
heard your work). But he did say
'And, for all I know, your sonata might be the finest thing produced in
America in the past half-century. But are you really unable to see how
arrogant and foolish you sound when you say, and I quote, "this Sonata WILL
be a Milestone of
Counterpoint for centuries to come"? History judges such things, not the
composer.'
IIRC, and the quote was not yours, but that of a colleague, I believe Tim's
point still holds. History, and not the composer (or even a contemporary of
the composer) will judge whether your Sonata is considered a milestone for
centuries. I hope it is and wish you all the best with it.

We clarinettists would not necessarily expect you, as a non-clarinet-player,
to have heard of some of the participants named here (Tony Pay, Howard Klug,
Abe Galper etc.)

FWIW:
Google searches:

"bear woodson" -groups -lists -re: -logs
11 hits

"david blumberg" music -groups -lists -re: -logs
431 hits

"anthony pay" OR "tony pay" music -groups -lists -re: -logs
180 hits

"avrahm galper" OR "abe galper" music -groups -lists -re: -logs
81 hits

"howard klug" music -groups -lists -re: -logs
154 hits

Note that I have excluded several terms which will exclude newsgroup posts
or similar to try to limit the results only to actual web-page content. And
I'm not promising that every one of these hits relates to the klarinet
subscriber. My point is that whether you have heard of them or not, these
people are well known and respected in the musical world. Clearly better
known than you are.

Finally, I appreciate that you are excited at having completed your
milestone Sonata, and that as a composer you are nothing until your works
are performed, heard, and enjoyed, but your enthusiastic postings about how
great your piece is should perhaps be posted to
alt.music.own-trumpet.blowing and not to klarinet.

Thanks for listening.

Ian

Hello, Klarinet List.

Well, I spent the last several days editing and
mailing off other works of music, and look what
happens. I get flamed by people who twist my
words, complain at me, as if I had been promoting
Intellectual Music for its own sake, when I had
specifically stated otherwise from the beginning.
Then they pose as if they have Supreme Expertise
and the Right to Judge Counterpoint, and works
of music that THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD!
Let's take a moment to look at what these charming
scholars have said, in spite of the facts.

<<snip>>

Actually, Mr. Blumberg, there is NOT ONE
person on this List that I have ever heard of, other
than on this List. So what does that mean about
you?
