I think you are making this much too complicated. The box reference is to
an ancient and obsolete construction technique.

Go to the Buffet web site and you can find pictures of modern basset horns
(although not a narrow bore in this case) and basset clarinet (in A but a
soprano basset clarinet in B-flat is also possible).

I have heard "extended clarinets" used to apply to any member of the
clarinet family that descends below a low E-flat. Roger Garrett produced a
CD with this name.
