<< Okay, I'll accept those people as contemporary composers, since the four
dead ones died recently; but where's the younger generation? The three
still alive were all born half a century or more ago, and I think that only
Zorn and Sciarino are still composing. >>

Try Rebecca Saunders, Thomas Ades, Morgan Hayes, Joby Talbot, Tansy Davies,
Joseph Phibbs, Dai Fukiyama, amongst others. There are plenty out there.

<< I agree with expanding the repertory, but while we're at it, let's not
remain stuck in the early 20th century, either. This is the 21st century.

So what is the 21st century style? I don't think serialism is "retro" at
the present time any more than tonality was "retro" for Beethoven at the
beginning of the 19th century. Certain styles of serialism may be retro but
then on the other hand you have people like Ferneyhough who are actively
taking serial methods in new directions. "Serialism" implies it's one style
when in fact there are diverse serial approaches to music, and have been
since the beginning.
