Tony Pay states:

I guess I should clarify a point. I originally posted to Anne regarding use
of the side fingering and the validity of using or not using it. I do not
wish to imply that there are no cases where it (the side F#) should be used.
Only that a case can be made.

When I have studied with a particular teacher, I find it best (for me) to
try and follow his/her teachings as closely as possible, whether on
interpretation, technique, etc. It is not that I believe in following like a
sheep, but that I think it is best to fully understand a person's approach.
As I move on and have fully digested what is there, I pick and choose what I
think works for me. An old teacher of mine used to say that studying was
like being a burglar: "Take what you want and leave the rest behind." I
don't think is is a good idea to follow for the sake of following and with
no thoughts of your own. Each person's playing should be a mix of what has
been learned from all sources.

Maybe what I should have said originally was that I learned to avoid it in
certain contexts where tone was a primary consideration.

Hope this helps,

Ed,
