I had a number of discussion about my like & dislike of "new music" at
ClarinetFest. A few things that I always bring up:

1) My internal definition of "good music" always has a "hook" (a theme,
something to go back to, either in pitch or rhythm) that I can remember
after I walk out of the room. It only takes a couple of notes or rhythmic
pulses. If I can't remember the hook, I'll never find the music, remember
the composer, or remember the performer - never mind buy it.

2) Gerry Errante is pretty "far out" in what he plays and does - remember to
drop by his performances. I've never been disappointed. Once in a while the
pieces start sounding a bit "Yanni"ish, but the Jane Brockman compositions
even things up ...

3) As long as there's a hook, I'll listen a few more times. Doesn't mean
I'll ever like it, but at least I'll give it a chance.
