I thought there was far too much new, and forgettable, music at the
Clarinetfest2003. out of probably 200+ pieces played there was one by
Brahms (a beautiful reading of the Op. 115 quintet but with a small toned
1st violinist) and two by Mozart (a poor reading of the concerto by Dave
Shifrin and a relatively uninspired performance of the Kegelstatt Trio with
Larry Combs). However performances aside, these composers have been so
instrumental in their writing for the clarinet and its later development.
If for only the reason of their influence more works by Brahms and Mozart
should have been performed.

Every other aspect of Clarinetfest 2003 was wonderfully organized and gave
me a new appreciation of the ICA. I never knew it would be like this.
Thank you Kathy Pope making a very memorable week.

I couldn't agree with you more. I am very open and flexible to new ideas
but if a piece of music is "crap," and draws a very small audience, there
simply isn't a nicer way to describe it. I am certainly no artist but I
myself could have designed some of the modern artworks I have seen displayed
in museums. I especially love the "sculptures" made of recycled materials.
Last year we toured an art museum with the kids and my son was "reprimanded"
for looking into a square wooden box with several holes placed in the sides.
Of course, there was nothing inside the box. It looked like an old relic
that may have been left at my Great Uncle's farm and someone placed it in
the art museum.
