This thread began with (my) complaint about too many performances that
weren't 'real music'. Someone else complained that we shouldn't live
in the past --- a thought with which I agree 100%. But since many
Klarineters don't know what *was* heard at this year's ClarinetFest:

There were (very) approximately 150-175 titles performed. I don't have
all of the programs any longer, but based on the programs that I do
have: Of the 150-175 titles, I found only 34 titles composed by
well-known, familiar-to-all-of-us, now-deceased names. Examples:
Corea, Reger, Cahuzac, Camilleri, Schubert, Debussy, Francaix, Shaw,
Stravinsky, Messiaen, Bernstein, Sibelius, Bruch, Mozart, Poulenc,
Ponchielli, Paganini, Williams, Saint-Saens Schumann, Hindemith, Smith,
Ravel, Ellington, Brahms, and so forth.

There were at least 8 premieres --- or 9, if you include Utah Symphony's
"About Us" with the trombone-playing Brunhilde, total nonsense but I am
*still* chuckling (except when I lose control and burst out guffawing).
An audience member claimed that the Wallace composition, performed by
Elsa Verdehr, received only its 4th or 5th performance on Thursday
night. It was a strong piece of 'real music' and (if I remember
correctly) both Wallace and Verdehr received standing ovation.

The only ClarinetFest CD that I purchased was Larry Combs playing a
premiere entitled "Liquid Ebony".

So there is **no way** that the complaint about living in the past is
well-founded. ClarinetFest is not living in the past. My issue was
(still is) with 'noise' that wasn't 'real music'.

...I just wanted to say that.
