Michael Norsworthy,
It was a good Rant.
I wasn't at the Fest; I wish I was and I wish I had heard some of the
things that Ormandtoby said that he liked and that he disliked. If you are a
fan and a performer of this sort of 'challenging' music, I can imagine how
frustrating it is to get people to listen to it. I hope you HAVE initiated a
good discussion of new music. I will admit to being somewhat ignorant. I have
never worked hard to understand some of the music I've heard and I probably
have not heard much. I believe I like the..... how did you say? "Neo-Romantic
Crap of the last 20 years." I doupt that you are really trashing all of the
more accessible recent music; by neo-romantic are you talking about composers
like Gorecki and Corigliano and Tredici? . And Mahler with light shows and
Britney Spears playing a new Clarinet Concerto made me laugh, but then think,
"Hmmm."
Seriously, help me with the descriptions, and help me learn more about
contemporay music. You've mentioned some names, which I'll try to look for.
Can you help a beginner? Can you mention some specific clarinet pieces, for
example, that could help someone like me appreciate something new? Can you
talk about how you are moved by music, when conventional melody and harmony are
not present. What turns you on about it?

Wayne Thompson
