I think with the whole lacquer thing its just a matter of personal
preference. Some people (i think bill said it) think that stripping the
lacquer makes no difference. A balck lacquer sax has 5x as much lacquer on
it as a gold lacquer and a white has 8x. A black lacquer sounds heaps darker
and the white just sounds dead. This is why selmer discontinued their white
lacquer. Lacquer is a plastic product that is used to seal wood. I can fully
understand why it would dull the vibrations and the sound.

I would never buy a sax just because it had perfect lacquer; especially
without playing it. One of the key questions might be "why hasn't it been
played? Is it because it's not a good horn?" My teacher got a mark vi 1955
for about 2250 american because it had no lacquer. It's a screamer. My horn,
a sba with a mark vi bore (it's a transitional model) has about 20% of it's
lacquer and carves through every horn i've player. The best bit? I got it
for 2250 and i've seen the perfect lacquer selmers on ebay not have their
reserve met at 5500 american.

In short- lacquer means nothing! Just play the bloody thing!
