So how would a lay person go about discovering if the B-45 they have been
using is one of the good ones or one of the bad ones? I should measure
something? Obviously, if the sound doesn't come out, it's bad, but y'all
are making me wonder if a different mouthpiece would be a good idea.

Have a Nice Day!!
Wendy :)

My teacher at the time actually took my B-45 away from me and told me to
buy something else instead. Until it arrived, I used the Yamaha
plastic mouthpiece that came with my student horn, which still sounds
reasonably OK to me today.

(She returned my B45 when she saw that I had actually taken her advice,
I have three B45's - one refaced and one with a different exterior angle
- gathering dust now. When I offered to donate them to other students
on tight budgets, she threatened to confiscate them again rather than
allowing me to give them away.)

It's merchandising strength that spreads so many B45's across the land,
IMO.
