I think you should take the piece at a tempo at which will allow you to play it Technically and Expressively well. If it gets to the point where you are playing it fast and it sounds too fast to you then slow it down a notch. But it starts where your abilities lie. If you can play it at 120 and you think it sounds great then be my guest and play it at 120. But if you play it at that pace make sure it is clean even and precise. On the other hand you might get to 120 and decide that in your opinion it is TOO fast. then slow it down. But listening to other recordings is good. But don't DEPEND on them. Part of playing music is making decisions about what you are playing based on yourself. Doing this helps you not onl play better but helps you grow as a musician.
