I doubt if the band director is a clarinet player. Perhaps it might work if
you made an appointment with him and very tactfully showed him the passage
and illustrated the problem. He is perhaps unaware of when and how each
fingering should be used and is simply trying to keep students from
"flipping" fingers going from an F to F#. It's also quite possible that the
students have misunderstood what he said and don't realize he is talking
about a specific situation.
