Subj: [kl] Clarinet Fest
Date: Tue, 15 Jul 2003 02:01:31 -0400

It is interesting to me how we al seem to have differing impressions of how
well the Clarfest was attended. My perception was that it was quite well
attended as compared to conferences in the past. I believe paid attendance
was around 900. I went to the Wednesday evening jazz program and the
Thursday night program. Both concerts seemed to me to be packed. My feeling
was that both concerts were WAY too long. I enjoyed both concerts, but
after spending all day in my booth listening to clarinets non-stop I
suppose my clarinet tolerance was at low level. My favorite performances
were those of Tad Calcara - who stole the show on the Jazz concert and
Giora Feidman who played with unbelievable control, imagination and always
from the heart.

My booth was in a smaller room adjacent to the large exhibitor room. The
large room always seemed to have people in it and my booth was jammed for
most of the session. In fact, I pretty much ran out of mouthpieces by about
2pm on Saturday and left early in hopes of catching an earlier flight. My
apologies to those who I may have missed.

My new Eb clarinet extension created very interesting reactions especially
in the Buffet booth where Francois Kloc and Eric Barre explained to me that
this idea had been used by them in the late 70s for the Elite clarinets.
And I thought this was a unique idea!

The clarinet conferences are wonderful events. The recitals are usually of
the highest caliber and where else can you find all of the latest and
greatest equipment/literature/accessories for the clarinet in one place?! I
think for many of us , it is also a chance to see people that we may only
see once a year. I was extremely happy to see three of my teachers: Dennis
Layne, Howard Klug and Gary Gray. It is also my only opportunity to visit
with my dear friend Luis Rossi.

Thank you everyone who visited my booth AND thank you for your support and
kind words!

Don't forget - Washington DC in 2004 and Tokyo in 2005!

Clark
