I've heard good things being said about the Noblet instrument, which is
pretty cheap at about GBP 700 or thereabouts. That and the E-11 (similar
price) should both be worth testing.

Don't buy anything without a good long test - a bad Eb is not something
anyone wants to hear!

I thought I'd post a follow-up to the discussion a month or so ago about
the
Eb clarinet and whether it could be heard in the band or not.

Some of you have seen my messages about my hand problems and the
neuropathy
and its causing my left hand not to expand properly to play the Bb. So
last
week, I went to community band and pulled the Eb parts (with the
conductor's
approval, of course.) I can assure you that even when played with the
same
breath support used on a Bb, ONE Eb clarinet CAN be heard above a 56
member
band (even with a strong brass section.) <g>

Of course, trying to adjust to all of the keys being closer and
sightreading
at the same time was a challenge. You should have heard (or probably
not
<g>) my sightreading of Anderson's Irish Washerwoman. It's a mistake to
assume that because you've played something many times, that playing a
new
part of the same thing will not cause any new surprises. I stupidly
didn't
look over the part beforehand, and wasn't quite ready when we suddenly
hit
3#s at that speed. <g>

I'm using one of the school's Ebs, and assuming I continue next season
on
Eb, I will be looking toward buying my own. Suggestions for a medium
priced, reliable instrument?
