Annie,

The now defunct German instrument maker E Arthur Eubel used to make a bass
clarinet based on German acoustic principles, but fitted with Boehm system.
These instruments were much easier to play from a technical point of view,
making their French counterparts seem very 'clumpish' in comparison. The
keywork arrangement is such that it seems as though one is playing on a
slightly larger soprano clarinet. The last of these instruments were made at
around the time that the Berlin wall came down.

I bought one of these instruments in 1978, and, although I now play on the
latest Selmer, still hanker after the flexibility of my old German bass.
Eubel also made excellent Boehm system basset horns. Maybe you could pick
one of these instruments up second hand.

Phil
