I realize this is a very "sticky" issue in today's world and it is the
reason I always ask. I have had students who simply were not =
comfortable
with this but I don't leave it at that. I get the parents involved and =
have
them do these "hands on" activities with them. Since most of my parents
come to their kids' lessons, its not a big deal for me. I live 3 miles =
out
of town and since lessons don't last that long, they sit at my couch in =
the
waiting area but still within full ear and eye shot of the entire =
lesson. I
love having it this way and I find those parents who are sitting through =
the
lessons are much more involved with their children's music lessons. I =
have
an 8th grade percussionist who just started taking piano lessons and his
parents have been attending every lesson. They remember things I said =
that
the kid don't remember and since they are armed with more information =
they
are more able to assist them in their practice at home. In my =
experience,
kids cannot play to a beat if they have never felt it before and cannot =
move
to it.
I'll have to say I would not do this with any of my students over =
the
age of probably 12 or 13 but they usually grasp the concept much more =
easily
by that time. =20
I also have several computers in my studio and I have a free =
metronome
that I downloaded from somewhere. Its called "Amazing Metronome" and =
has
adjustable percussion sounds, different time signatures and subdivisions =
it
will do (all have visuals that go across the screen). Its great and I =
think
I got it perhaps from freesheetmusic.com or some such place. Christy =20
