I hate to perpetuate a marching band related thread, but in the old days
before marching band competitions became a big deal:

1. Bands did different shows every week with different music and for those
who couldn't memorize fast or didn't want to waste the time, flip folders
were essential.
2. They didn't do as much complicated marching as they do now.

I don't actually know when this change took place. It may have been at
different times in different parts of the country. There was a few
competitions in the mid-60's in Southern California, but the only one we
went to was won by an elaborate show rather than good marching.
