Subj: [kl] Sharing Classical Music
Date: Mon, 7 Jul 2003 16:06:49 -0400

Several people in the past have shared stories about how their interest in
classical music finally made a dent in their children or in other young people.
I had such a situation this weekend that I wanted to share.

I was noodling on the piano while my 10-year-old son was reading another
Captain Underpants book, when he said, "Dad, would you play that one about the
guy in the art gallery?" He rarely makes requests other than Star Wars or
Disney tunes, so it took me a minute to realize that he meant "Pictures At An
Exhibition". The original "Pictures" is wickedly difficult for piano, but I
love it, so I slog through it from time to time.

I was happy to comply, of course, but what made it even more fun was my son
acting out the various movements. He has a very dramatic imagination, and each
part brings up a vivid image for him.

It was fun for both of us, and it made me think there might be some hope after
all.
