I never saw a flip folder in the years my younger son played trumpet and
marching baritone horn in his HS marching band. I don't think I even saw
them use a lyre to hold music. It's hard enough to walk and chew gum--it's
that much harder to do fancy steps, play, and worry about what's on the
page. Which accounted for band camp. Didn't someone here say that they
didn't do band camp because the school was too cheap? A pity. Our kids
took the field looking like pros because they'd spent a really intensive
week with the band director and drum majors drilling them in the
choreography for the selections. Nobody stepped on anyone else's feet,
they managed some intricate footwork, and they sounded good enough to at
least place high in the band competitions at Giants Stadium every
year. Plus, everyone had fun at band camp: except for the kid who went
directly from band camp (in Pennsylvania) to drug rehab because they caught
him, at age 15, with some joints and the Gross National Product of Ecuador
in his locker.

Oh well.

Ken
