I had a similar experience at the National Flute Assn convention last
summer. At one of their jazz concerts, sitting at the back of a 3000 seat
hotel ballroom where some amplification would have been appropriate, the
sound techs had the volume so hot that it was painful, and any
resemblance to flute sound was extremely incidental. Morons diddling the
knobs, indeed.

In movie theaters, I've often wondered if the sound level is purposely
loud to assist with the TV generation attitude that verbal commentary is
OK in such a setting. At home, in front of the TV, it only disturbs a few
fellow TV watchers - in a crowded theater, it's a real nuisance, but if
the sound track is loud enough, it's not possible to be disturbed by
people talking! Just a theory.
