Subj: [kl] The Decline and Fall of BBC Radio 3 (a serious music channel)
Date: Thu, 3 Jul 2003 06:16:46 -0400

The following apocryphal story is based on fact, with some
historical and archaeological deductions.

Fact: On the 8th of June 2003, a programme called "Sunday Live"
included a performance of Francaix's Quatuor for clarinet,
basset horn, bass clarinet and piano that had been recorded
at a Balkan Chamber Music Academy Project concert at the
34th Belgrade Music Festival, 2002. The clarinet players were
Ogrian Popovic (Project Leader), Ange Myevky and Verko Klenkovsky
(phonetic spellings). The Quatuor was not included in the published list
of works printed in the Radio Times, but appeared on the website playlist
for this programme, (to which not all listeners have access). The Radio
Times does not *indicate* (an asterisk would be enough) when their
listings are incomplete. It was therefore lost in the ether.
One may suppose that both are quite a frequent occurrences.
It is an entertaining but quite difficult work and very rarely performed
(Schott edition) and is not yet available on a commercial CD.
It was probably played from a tape included in the European Broadcasting
Union exchange scheme. According to EBU rules it can only be transmitted
once.
It consequently lost a proportion of its audience. Due to an oversight the
following week, the website failed to carry the playlist for this programme
in advance of transmission.

Fiction: All the heavyweight, charismatic music producers of the 1960-70-80s
have disappeared. Radio Times has gained controlled of the Radio Three
in order to allocate more of its pages to interviews with dysfunctional
celebrities
and provided less space for Radio Three. More R3 air times has therefore
been give to world music since its requirements are minimal and it any case
no-one knows their Patet from their Teental. Belgrade is aware of the
omission
and BBC staff involved should assume that it will be unsafe for them to go
there until further notice!
