Ditto!

The membership of the list itself collectively comprises the list ownership. It's a little
baffling to me, especially concerning people who've been on the list for years and years, that
people still think Mark Charette is some kind of moderator or arbiter of content. I don't
remember this misconception being applied to Jim Fay and/or Cap Bromley during the bitnet era of
Klarinet history. Mark administers maintenance of the hardware, software, and connectivity that
make the Klarinet listserv a viable internet discussion forum. As far as the content and nature
of discussion are concerned, he is one among 800+ equal participants. The only difference is that
he's also saddled with handling members' discrete administrative issues, as well as responding to
rare demands-in-plurality that somebody be disallowed or unsubscribed for engaging in especially
offensive or disruptive behavior. He happens to hold that unique power. Such instances have been
rare indeed over the 9 or so years that I've enjoyed membership on the list.

So, to reiterate the point: Mark Charette does not own Klarinet, nor does he monitor/censor its
content. He *is* the moderator of the Klarinet billboard on the woodwind.org web site, but that's
a different animal altogether (despite a cross-pollenation of members between the two forums).
Insinuations that Mark is responsible for "keeping people in line", or for wielding any influence
whatsoever upon the judgment of we who post messages on the listserv, are false.

Don't like what people are saying? Ultimate power is yours and yours alone. Options? (1) Hit
the delete key, (2) Put a "block" on a given person's messages so that they never reach your "In"
box in the first place, (3) Unsubscribe yourself, or (4) Respond, join the fray, fan the fire,
participate, engage in the exchanges (you get the idea).

We might all as well stop bugging Mark as if he's on some kind of Klarinet payroll, available to
answer requests for actions over which each member alone already has supreme control. Heck, he
doesn't even get paid for the tech admin work he does that keeps the list up & running. Pledge
drives are for the aforementioned hardware, software, and connectivity issues that keep the system
functional. That's pretty much it.

Neil
