After my follow-up to Tony Pay's J. K. Rowling parody, Nancy Buckman wrote,
>>So when does this get released as a movie on DVD?
>>I want to buy the first disc and have it signed. ;?)

Gee, thanks. Will you sign my jail release papers, too? ;-)

Nancy and I are both kidding around, of course, and I don't want to make a
Great Big Deal out of it, but maybe this is worth mentioning.... Up to a
point, parody is protected speech, so I'm not nervous about Tony Pay and
others of us doing a brief bit of spoofery on an e-list, but anybody who
truly violates Rowling's copyright with knockoff Harry Potter fiction,
movies or just about anything else can expect Rowling and the holders of
the movie rights and trademarks to sue the violators' socks off. According
to a June 18 article by Ariana Eunjung Cha in _The Washington Post_, the
owners of these rights are protecting them so aggressively that they're
even shutting down amateur writers' unauthorized fan fiction sites on the
Internet. The heavy-handed approach is understandable, since there's an
enormous amount of money at stake. In a different _Washington Post_
article on June 24, Cha writes that the latest volume's U. S. edition had a
first print run of 8.5 million copies, of which more than 5 million copies
sold *the first weekend*!

Hmmm.... Marketing goal for clarinet players, teachers and sellers of
clarinets and their music: Persuade J. K. Rowling that one of her major
characters needs a magical clarinet. But no, she's probably already hired
somebody to fend off the product placement vultures....
