What style are we talking about? Is it orchestral/classical. If that =
is
the case, any good quality condenser mic placed a few feet back should =
sound
fine. By good quality, I mean any Neumann, any Schoeps, any Sennheiser =
MKH
series mic (except the 416 and 418 which are shotgun mics for long =
distance
micing), Any microtech geffel... My favorites are Schoeps CMC6-MK4 (in =
a
good room), Sennheiser MKH40, and Microtech Geffel M930.

While mics are important (obviously), the placement is more important. =
I
usually mic woodwinds from at least a couple feet out (even in a "close =
mic"
situation) as the sound is not pleasant right up next to the instrument.
For jazz sessions, I place mics about an arm length out and for =
classical
soloists a bit more. For section work (ie orchestra), I place one mic =
in
front of the flute/clarinet and one in front of the oboe/bassoon (2nd
players for both usually) at a height of about 6-7 feet. This way you =
hear
a section sound, but can get the definiton on the instruments as needed.
