Karl and Oliver,

Thanks to both of you.

Whilst gnashing my teeth I have emailed Sibelius. Hopefully they can do
something.

Even better, Sibelius 2.11 (the current version) includes a conversion
utility. You just choose .mus or .etf from the Files/Open drop down
list. I
found that it wouldn't actually open the .mus files - it told me to
re-open
the file in Finale, update the layout and re-save as an Enigma
Transportable
File (.etf). When I did this it worked pretty well, except that some of
the
symbol handling in Fin2003 is too new and isn't recognized. But it got
close
enough that I could have repaired anything that wasn't right pretty
easily.
The obvious problem is that you still need to have Finale (in some
version)
on your computer in order to do this, which makes it useless to you and
anyone else who only wants to buy one program. You still might want to
contact Sibelius and ask them how to open Finale files. They have a
clear
vested interest in trying to help.
