I have memorized the Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie for the Young Artist
semifinals in SLC. A trick my professor showed me was, play through the
piece (or a section) then take a step back from the music. Play through
it again, step back farther. Keep doing this until you can barely see the
music. You'll have repeated it enough times to start having muscle
memory, but you can also start to see the page in your head, so you
remember the things muscle memory doesn't store (dynamics, articulations,
phrases)
