Christy, This kid is exceptional. I think it's in is genes. I sent him
the kinder-klari for Christmas last year, and he taught himself how to
cover the holds, produce a sound and play "When the Saints Come Marching
In". When I called his dad, Jon, in February to see how Alec was doing
on the clarinet, at that point Jon said "His fingers are too small to
play the kinder-klari". Then all of a sudden, out of the blue, I heard
from Larry Guy, who was playing in the pit orchestra for "La Boheme"
during the strike. Jon was playing principal clarinet, and I heard
during the first week of the strike that Alec was a very "Smart Alec"
and had taught himself to cover the holes and play down to a low F, and
that he was playing "When the Saints........" by "ear".
His daddy keeps him supplied with reeds. So far he has not come
close to having an "accident" with a reed. He initially put his clarinet
together by himself and got everybody's attention. He is very focused
and loves to play. Before we got started, he informed me that he sounded
very good with his Dad. He already plays one octave scales in F, G and
Bb. Today we are going to work on these some more. I have some little
games with each of the tetra-chord halves of the scale that I call
"Follow the Yellow Brick Road". He is a little bit hesitant about
hitting his low F, so we are going to play some "pinky-power" games. We
are also going to play the "Basin Street Blues" to work on a few
chromatic notes and play the piece together as a duet. I have to go get
