Of course, in all these cases the true "extremists" were the ones who
supported the status quo and refused to budge at all. Yes, they were in
the wrong, but EITHER side insisting on the whole cake will cause avoidable
arguments. A left-handed conductor will probably be acceptable to a
majority of musicians, but some may still have problems interpreting the
beat, not because they don't want to, but because they physically have
trouble with it. For the left-handed conductor not to be sensitive to
THEIR problem would be unfair.
