Richard,

If you can afford it, I would highly recommend a
minidisc recorder with an external mic jack and a
decent external microphone. My setup is a Sony MZ-N1
minidisc recorder and Sony ECM-MS907 microphone.
Records much better than a boombox mic. Total cost to
me was $350. The minidiscs aren't too expensive and
you can record over them. Plus, it is a great
portable music player and lightweight.
