Now, don't laugh TOO hard, it actually happens. Or did. Back in the early
'60s at the Metropolitan Opera, when they did Ponchielli's La Gioconda,
Fausto Cleva would put down the baton during the final section of "Dance of
the Hours" and let the orchestra play without there being any stick TO
follow. But this wasn't the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, folks; on more than
one occasion, especially with a routiner in the pit, the old (pre-James
Levine) orchestra sounded like a bar mitzvah pickup band assembled from
Local 802.
