The Bundy Eb clarinet belonged to a student of Jon Manasse who he taught
several years ago at Eastman. She sold it to Jon. I originally sent Alec
my "Kinder-Klari" which I bought from John Denman in Tuscon before he
passed away. I had originally bought it for my grand-daughter, who is
now ten, and old enough for a regular clarinet. The Kinder Klari is o.k.
but very difficult to play because it is not really a clarinet, but sort
of like a cross between a toy and a clarinet. Little Alec was able to
learn how to cover his holes and produce a sound on the kinder-klari in
NYC, but then Jon located the Bundy Eb from his student, who had
upgraded to a better Eb. The Bundy Eb is just perfect for little Alec. I
don't know where to find old Bundy Eb clarinets. I have heard that
Leblanc plastic Eb clarinets cost a fortune. I guess I would recommend
that a tiny kid play an Eb Buffet E-11 if the parents can afford it.
Maybe an E-11 C clarinet if they are younger than 8. Alec is a "Smart
Alec". He has taught himself to play "When the Saints go Marching In" by
ear. I tried to teach him another tune and he didn't want to do it right
then. He told me he had to swab out his clarinet because it had spit in
it. I said "o.k." and we went and fed the squirrels peanuts for a while.
He's coming over again in a few minutes. I'll let you know how it goes.
