Subj: [kl] Gran Partitta in Santa Fe

Dear List,

As Dan promised I'd post, here's the details of the Gran Partitta in
Santa Fe. This is taking place in the context of the annual Kammermusik
Woodwind Workshop for adult amateurs, and I am taking advantage of Dan's
cross-country trip to have him do a masterclass on the GP for us on the
weekend of July 5/6/7. The ensemble is mixed professional and good
amateur. We will be working between 10 and 5 on the Sat and Sun, 9-12 on
Mon 7. In the evening of July 7 (not 8th as in Dan's post) we will be
doing a playthrough at 8 pm; the other event in that concert will be a
short recital from the coaches' woodwind quintet (the coaches are
excellent, based on the New Mexico Woodwind Quintet, led by Lori Lovato
of the NMSO, Santa Fe SO and this list), which is the kick-off event for
the main workshop.

It's better to say "playthrough" rather than "performance", since it is
being run as a masterclass/workshop to deepen our understanding of the
GP and its performance, rather than to aim at the best possible
performance (of course, we'll do our best!). So, for example, there will
be two players (when available) allocated for each part and though they
won't all play at once, they will alternate in some manner during the
playthrough. During the masterclass, rehearsals will be interspersed
with addresses by Dan on the history and instrumentation of the piece,
and discussion (with musical examples played by the participants)
addressing various performance difficulties and choices.

Both the master class and the workshop are full for player-participants.
However, there is room for a few auditors of the class and attendees at
the concert, and List members will be welcome. I'll need to know
beforehand if you are coming. There'll be a $10 charge for each of the
days, to help keep Dan in pizza and beer. Please email me off-list if
you are interested. The location is the Sunrise Springs Inn and Resort
on the south-west side of Santa Fe, very near the I-25. Drop in on the
way to Klarinetfest, it's only a couple of states over.

We will be making a good quality audio/video recording of the workshop,
which might be available for sale if legal issues can be handled. I'll
let the List know if this happens.

We will be counting our basset-horns carefully before you leave, but
List members will be welcome to try mine as well as Dan's. Yeah, it's a
little bit better than his ;-), but I look forward to learning all I can
from him!

>>>Here is my schedule for anyone who wants to have an experience
playing
basset horn. You must bring your own mouthpiece and reed which should
be a light one, maybe 2 to 2-1/2 at the most. A 3 reed can cause a
burst blood vessel on a basset horn. Please don't plan to hang around
too long because I will want to rest after driving all day. It is not
that I'm trying to be difficult, but I have to get from Washington, DC
to California by car on a certain date. Contact me privately if you are
interested and I'll tell you where I am staying.

...

>>>Friday, July 4, depart for Santa Fe, NM staying until July 10 but
working with Keith Bowen's chamber group to play the Gran Partitta.
Keith also has a Fox basset horn with gold keys and it is said to be as
good if not better than mine. So if you are in the Santa Fe area, we
will probably play the piece after lots of rehearsals sometime on July
8. We will also try to play the Adagio for 5 clarinets but no promises
on that one. I ask Keith to make a posting on this matter so that
interested parties can attend. I will remain in Santa Fe until the 10th.
