I was lucky enough to be his first clarinet in the RPO for seven or
eight years, and I completely agree with your assessment -- perhaps with
the reservation that he wasn't outstanding at Mozart or other
small-scale classical music.
There were half-a-dozen concerts with him in that period that were
unforgettable. I rate him the greatest conductor I ever worked with,
and it's a real privilege to have done so.

That was one of the pieces that we played with him shortly after I
joined. We played it, I remember, in Prague.

He was there for a year after I joined, before winning his famous BPO
