Christy,
I agree that teachers should not force left-handed students
to write with their left hands, but I disagree that left-handedness
is a true handicap.

My brother was also born breech, and he came out with his
left arm held up alongside his head; basically, his left hand came
out last. He always favored that hand, but I'm not sure if it
had anything to do with the way he was born, because there
are plenty of lefties who are NOT born breech.

When my brother started kindergarten, in 1960, his
teacher tried to make him use his right hand. Our mother
talked to the teacher about it and insisted that he be allowed
to use his left hand, and that was the end of it.

Both my brother and my oldest son are lefties, and in no
way are they handicapped by it. They are both very smart,
talented people. Sure, it was a little tricky at first, learning
to use scissors, etc, with their left hand. But they are both
carpenters/cabinet makers who do EXCELLENT work,
so I can't believe that they have had TOO much trouble
being lefties.

I mean, my brother is a master craftsman who builds the
most awesome bentwood staircases and custom fireplace
mantels, just awesome work. Not a klutz by any means.
He is also a drummer in a local blues band, and he's good enough
to make a living at it if he wanted to do that full time. I swear,
the guy has some kind of built-in metronome or something.

My son decided to take an art class last year, and this was
really his first attempt at "real" art (whatever that means)
he did so well, one of the other students got ANGRY
at him, and didn't believe that he really did the work!!!
I mean, she was screaming at him, called him a liar and
everything.

I don't think he considers himself handicapped, but
I'll ask him sometime.
