My grandfather dropped out of school in 8th grade because he was left
handed. His teacher would smack him with the hickory stick whenever he
tried to write with his left hand. I think we've come a little ways since
then. He was a carpenter. He used a left-handed hammer and a left-handed
saw.
I think calling it a handicap is a sorry excuse and you might even want to
consider feeling ashamed of yourself for even trying to compare a little
thing like that to any viable handicap. I'll buy you a left-handed coffee
mug for Christmas. Perhaps you could quit your job and live off of
disability for the rest of your handicapped years. My grandfather just got
a new power wheelchair (cuz he's old-not cuz he's left-handed). Maybe
he'll let you borrow it so you can at least try to function in normal
society. Handicapped. Pshaw!

Karl, As I mentioned, some might interpret it that way. There is a great
deal of evidence that left-handedness is caused by some type of injury at
birth. I was born breech and my Mom always said I've been backwards ever
since. I guess I would argue that left-handedness is and has been turned
into a handicap throughout history. I was one of the fortunate few who
wasn't told I had to write with my right hand as a child in school. Can you
imagine what a handicap it would be if you were forced to write with the
hand that was not the most comfortable for you? Its difficult enough for
those who suffer an injury and have no choice. If a student finds it easier
to conduct a beat pattern with their left hand, the teacher who asks that
student to conduct the opposite way is turning a difference into a handicap.
That student would be forced to work overtime to meet that requirement and I
think its outrageous.
