If I am not mistaken, early instruments (chalumeau or before) were made
with the reed and the whole instrument in one piece. Of course that means
every time your reed wears out, you have to buy a whole new
instrument. Somewhat inefficient, I would say. And given the wild
inconsistency in mouthpieces, to have to replace one every time your reed
(even an polymer one) wore out would not be much better!
