Actually, I seem to remember reading (I think in David Pino's
book, The Clarinet and Clarinet Playing) that 'way a long time
ago, the mouthpiece and reed were made in one piece. You had
to throw the whole mouthpiece away when the reed wore out.
At least I THINK I'm remembering it correctly.

Of course, if someone were to make a polymer one, it would
last longer. But then, it seems like there would have to be TONS
of different models, to accomodate everyone's different mouthpiece/
reed/ligature preferences, right?
