Having played for a couple of leftie conductors over the years, I'd second
the suggestion that, while it looks different at first, I quickly get used
to it and feel no confusion or discomfort. Yes, the beat pattern is
reversed, although if you think of up, down, in and out instead or up, down,
right and left, the patterns are consistent. But I generally only rely on
the beat pattern, if at all, for the first and, maybe, the last beat of the
measure. I think you can read tempo, musical character, and anything else
you need from the conductor without the right-left orientation of the inner
beats making any real difference. There are many right-handed conductors,
after all, whose beats are not clear as to direction, especially if viewed
from the side.
