A couple of comments:

It was common practice to record the different sections of the orchestra
at different times - and often in different locations. I'm not a recording
engineer, so I can't comment on the reasons; but I know that Columbia did
it with Bruno Walter. He was the only performer at the session with
earphones. No matter how hard you try to compensate for that, there will
be problems.

Our national emphasis on music education has done much of what it was
designed to do. We have more and better performers and more and better
listeners. I believe that it was Emerson who talked of a nation
of "educated blacksmiths". When most everybody has an education then that
education will be found at all levels of society. Professionals have to be
better when many more amateurs can perform at a very high level.
