Deidre, The biggest question in my mind is; does the playing of a =
musical
instrument develop these skills or are individuals simply born with this
skill, which might make it easier to learn to play a musical instrument =
that
requires the use of both hands? I have always been the way I am, since =
I
certainly learned to write and eat left-handed before I ever leaned to =
play
a musical instrument. I have a new clarinet student and I was not =
surprised
at the answer when I questioned her about her handedness. She is =
exactly
the same mix that I am. She is a 7th grader and has been playing first
chair out of 27 clarinet players at our local junior high. =
Interestingly
enough, some of my quickest and most talented piano students have been =
the
very same "mix."
The other day I was thinking about how people play the violin. The
particular "mix" I have is ideal, since I'm very comfortable with the =
bow in
my right arm and fingering with my left hand. This is exactly what =
comes
very naturally for me. How does an extreme right-hander adapt and feel
comfortable fingering with the left hand? I'm afraid I might never be =
able
to play a violin if things were reversed and I had to finger with my =
right
hand and bow with the left.
