Subj: [kl] Adjusting Reeds

Hello,

After reading Charles Miles ad for his reed making tools, I got to wondering
what devices are used by the folks on this list to adjust commercial reeds.
I'd also like to know if anyone has been successful in making reeds they can
play on. I tried it once (reed making) under the direction of my teacher as
an exercise. Bassoon reed knife, files, wet/dry, a flat surface and a good
desk light is what I used then. Made a few good ones but spent long hours
at it. I have a good match with my Woodwind Legend Series O-10 and GC Evol.
in 3 1/2 so there's no reason to work at reed making.

Anyway, I own a Ben Amato PerfectaReed jig and use it as feedback to balance
any reed that needs it. The cane is pretty good in the GC. I can get most
of them to play unless the heart was cut out. No guessing - the dial
indicator shows you where to sand/scrape. I'm not saying I've figured out
or conquered the 'reed problem'. I'm just not suffering so badly from it
like I used to.

.... back to lurking. : )
